Year 1

A very warm welcome back to Year 1 

I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and New Year and are all refreshed and ready for a new term.

Spellings and homework go out on a Wednesday. Homework books should be returned to school on Monday. Your child’s spelling test will also be on Mondays.

Children should be heard read three times a week and strive for five if possible. For every 10 home reads your child achieves they will be issued a certificate in recognition of their hard work. Children will read to an adult at school at least once a week.

We will have PE this half term on a Tuesday and Thursday this half term. We recommend that your child leaves their PE kit in school during the week in case we have any timetable changes.


Please find below an outline of the areas of learning for our half term.

In Numeracy we will be Time, reading and writing numbers to 40 and beyond and addition and subtraction.
In Reading we will be We will be working in our guided reading groups. Our focus author will be Mini Grey.
In Literacy we will be We will be working together as a whole school on a project ‘No Outsiders in our School,’ with our focus on equality. Our focus text will be Ten Little Pirates by Mike Brownlow.
In RE we will be Learning about The Kingdom of God.
In topic we will be We will be learning about Florence Nightingale.
In PE we will be We be having a PE coach in on a Tuesday morning and having PE on a Thursday afternoon.
In ICT we will be We will using programmable toys such as Bee-Bots and activities involving the use of IPads.
In Science we will be We will be learning all about Everyday Materials.


Your support at home is invaluable. Please help your children with their phonics, spellings, reading, homework, counting in 2, 5 and 10’s and number bonds to 10 and 20 as frequently as you can.
